Overmolding

Locate a prepared substrate in a tool for another material to be molded over selected regions. Review loading, support, surface protection and the practical shut-off areas.

The exact substrate and overmold grades govern compatibility. Agree bonding or retention checks for the actual interface and use conditions.

Two-shot molding

Two injection stages work within a planned tool and machine arrangement. Review transfer or rotation, indexing, alignment and the processing requirements of both materials.

Define color boundaries, allowable mismatch, flash, gate witness and visible parting lines before the tool is finalized.

Review the interface before tooling

  • Locate & support. Hold the first component without damaging visible surfaces.
  • Shut-offs. Allow for practical sealing regions and variation in the substrate.
  • Material behavior. Review shrinkage, temperature exposure and distortion across both molding stages.
  • Service conditions. Define grip areas, cleaning chemicals, wear and exposed surfaces.
  • Acceptance. Agree retention, peel, pull or other functional checks appropriate to the component.

A general product photograph does not establish a multi-material process. Source examples are identified as overmolded or two-shot only where the process is supported.

Questions, answered

Is overmolding the same as two-shot molding?

Both can combine materials, but the handling and tooling route differ. Overmolding commonly reloads a prepared substrate; a two-shot system integrates two injections in an organized molding cycle.

Will any two plastics bond?

No. Adhesion depends on the particular material grades and process. Mechanical interlocks may be needed. Samples and agreed tests are used to evaluate the proposed combination.
